Course Descriptions
Jointly offered by MTPC and EMIA, this 3-credit Technical Theater Arts course delves into the backstage realm of theater production. Students will explore the collaborative nature of diverse technical disciplines in shaping a stage production. Through hands-on experience with hardware, software, and a custom-designed meta-verse training tool, they will study techniques that deliver real-world performance and presentation. The course also covers front of house fundamentals, field trips, and a performance-based capstone project, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of theater operations.
Course Details
- Time: 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
- Date: Feb 3, 17, 24, Mar 2, 9, 16, 23, Apr 6, 13, 20, 27, May 4, 6 and (back up session) May 11
- Duration: 13 weeks including the final capstone project
- Venue: Main Hall and other venues of the HKUST Shaw Auditorium
- Target Students: Students from all schools
- Enrollment: 25
- Assessment: Includes class participation, field trip report, written exam, and capstone project
- Supplementary practical exercises are not included in the above schedule
- Attendance of at least 80% of the sessions is required to be eligible for the capstone project
Planned Activities
- Lectures on the theories behind stage design and technologies
- Demos of the stage setup, hands-on practice of related skills
- Metaverse lighting training in the virtual Shaw Auditorium
- Discussions and case studies on specific technical topics
- Backstage tour of performance group and theater
- Capstone project on a theater production
Application Procedures
- Interested students can complete and submit the online application form by clicking the "Apply Now" button on or before 17 Jan 2024
- Selected applicants will be informed on 18-19 Jan 2024 for interview on 22 Jan at 11:00 am in the Main Hall of the Shaw Auditorium
- Confirmation for acceptance will be emailed to successful applicants on 23 Jan 2024. Successful applicants can submit the course enrollment for Spring 2024 accordingly.

Join the Technical Team
Students who successfully complete this course will be invited to join the MTPC Technical Team as student helpers at the Shaw Auditorium to participate in the daily operation of the theater and provide backstage support for performances and events.
